YouTube Partner Program Explained

Make Money on YouTube

People across the world are making thousands of dollars with the YouTube Partner Program. Some individuals are using this income earner as their sole method of income and bring in thousands of dollars yearly, monthly or even weekly or daily.

There’s a lot of potential with this simple model and it’s something that you can do from the comfort of your own home.

Not every YouTube video that you see on the Internet will be making these types of earnings. The people that are making a lot of money have dedicated themselves to making videos that spark interest and generate shares in social media.

Of course, just as you see in the music industry, there are one-hit wonders where a person puts a video online and it takes off.

In most cases, however, there is a commitment and a dedication to the business and making sure that videos are constantly uploaded to create higher revenue streams.

You won’t make $1 million overnight using this model but there is the potential to start earning a small amount of money right away.

When you learn what people are looking for on YouTube and can create videos to satisfy this need there is no reason why you can’t start generating some type of income yourself.

How much you make will depend on your determination, your persistence and your ability to create videos that people are dying to see.

How The YouTube Partner Program Works

If you’re at all familiar with YouTube you’ve seen ads appear before the video starts or when it ends. If you’re like most people you probably get quite frustrated having to view them first.

Sometimes you’ll see the same ad over and over again no matter what videos you’re watching. While as a viewer it can be quite frustrating, this works to your advantage when you’re working this business model.

Sponsors pay YouTube to show their ads and every time an ad is clicked YouTube gets paid. When you take part in the Partnership Program with YouTube you will get a cut of this money, roughly 55% . This means that you can start making money right away.

The amount at the beginning will be small but you can start building it up by consistently uploading great videos to build up subscribers and viewers.

The image below shows a YouTube video by Jenna Marbles, one of the highest-paid YouTubers online. As you can see she has over 16 million fans, and this particular video pulled in over 65 MILLION views.  I estimate she made enough to buy a REALLY nice car with this one video.

Jenna Marbles YouTube earnings

Many customers recommend establishing an engaged and loyal community before monetizing your channel. Others start monetizing it right away to start seeing results. It’s easy to monetize your videos and once you’ve done it your main focus will be producing videos.

You won’t have to do much else other than keeping track of the videos that are popular and getting more views so that you have a better idea of what people are looking for.

You can also make money by affiliate marketing, which means that you’ll be making product reviews and will be sharing them with others through your videos.

There are thousands of people worldwide that want to see how a product works before shelling out their hard-earned money. When you put up a video showing how a product looks, feels and works, others will want to see what you have to say.

Some YouTube channels are making millions with this method and it’s one of the easiest ways to get started in this field. Simply find a product that you like and talk about it. Show people what you like and don’t like about the product and whether or not you would recommend it.

There will be ads appearing on your video that people can click for further information about that specific product and you’ll earn when people click on them.

How Much Can You Make from the YouTube Partner Program?

In order to make a substantial income from YouTube, you’ll have to have a lot of viewers seeing your videos. This is why it is so important to consistently keep a constant flow of videos running to your channel.

There aren’t a lot of people that get rich from YouTube by uploading a single video. Most of the big money earners put up videos regularly and their audience learns to expect them.

With YouTube, your creative possibilities are virtually endless and so are the potential earnings. Many millionaires have been created using the YouTube Revshare business model and there are many people that earn a living solely with this method.

Here is an example of how much money is earned on average with this revenue sharing program.

For every 1 million views to your video ad, you’ll receive approximately $1,000 US. This is just an approximation, however, and is just a reflection of how much earning potential there is right now. Tomorrow’s amounts may be different.

If a video goes explosively viral there is the possibility that it will reach 1 million views in a relatively short amount of time. You should never count on just making one video and having it explode on the Internet, however.

You should commit yourself to making multiple videos so that your high viewer count can be reached through a selection of videos.

The more videos that you produce, the higher the likelihood is that one of them will go viral. In the meantime, you can still be making money through your consistent work. Many millionaires built up their companies through persistent dedication while few became millionaires overnight.

The best part about working with the YouTube platform is you will be able to have fun while you’re working. As you’re growing your income and bringing it to new heights you’ll be playing an Internet game where everyone wins – both you and your loyal fans.

While you’re making these videos you can also rest assured that your income potential is not limited in any way. You can reach for the stars by working this method and you won’t find a lot of businesses out there that can make the same claim.

What You Need to Get Started as a VLogger

Here is what you will need to start making money with the YouTube Partner Program. I have listed quite a bit of gear below, but please keep in mind that just about everything on this list is optional – except for the Adsense account – without that you can’t get paid!

Adsense Account

Before you can earn money with your videos you will need to complete these 3 steps:

  • Join the YouTube Partner Program
  • Set Up an Adsense Account for Payments
  • Choose the Videos You Want to Monetize

This is all free and It’s explained in this article over on Google’s site so just go there and read all the requirements.

Video Creation

Creating your videos does not have to be a huge production. As a matter of fact, many of Youtube’s top earners started off using their webcams or mobile phones to create the videos that earn them millions of dollars a year.

However, if you are making videos in a niche where the “Look” is important such as Food, Fashion or Beauty you may need to use something a little higher quality than your phone or stock webcam.

The most popular camera with Vloggers seems to be the Canon Powershot G7 X.  The main reason given is that the G7 X is much easier to carry around than a DSL. And with FULL HD video at up to 60fps this little camera is a video powerhouse.

If you want to shoot action videos for your YouTube channel then the hands-down best camera to use is the GoPro Hero5.  It shoots 4K Video and is shockproof and waterproof to 33ft.

If you’re looking to make gaming videos with your face overlaid in the corner like Pewdiepie, you will need a decent webcam. Pewdiepie uses the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. The camera has amazing picture quality and is easy to set up. It’s a great webcam overall for beginning YouTubers.

To capture gameplay you will need software that can record your computer screen’s video output, such as Fraps or GameCam for Windows, and Snapz Pro X for Mac users.

Audio

A survey revealed that good sound was more important to people than good video so eventually you’ll want to invest in a good external microphone. One option is to attach a shotgun mic to the hot shoe of your camera to easily capture high-quality sound.

Lavalier mics are also a great option for recording audio, but require the extra step of attaching the mic discreetly to a piece of clothing before each shoot.

Video Editing Software

Basic Video Editing Software
  • iMovie (Mac) – Equipped with an array of fantastic and practical video editing features, iMovie is an idea video editing tool for anyone. Comes with every new iMac, it’s free of charge and provides a wide range of effects and tools sets, thus it’s always considered as an essential tool for any Mac user to enhance their vologs.
  • Windows Movie Maker (PC) – This is a free and very basic video editor that comes bundled with Windows. It is okay for beginners but as you progress you will really start to feel the limitations.
  • YouTube Video Editor (Cloud Based) – This is YouTube’s free web-based video editor. This video editor lacks many features.  It can however, be useful for a while before the user decides on a better video editor software to purchase.
Intermediate Video Editing Software
  • Adobe Premiere Elements 14 (Mac/PC) – As a stripped-down version of Premiere Pro version, Adobe Premiere Elements has just enough features for video bloggers. By making use of automated options, special effects, and in-app guidance, you can easily turn your video clips to fantastic movies. It also supports many third-party plug-ins for additional features.
  • Avidemux (Mac/PC/Linux)- Avidemux is another popular free video editing tool. It can handle most of the basic editing tasks such as crop, rotate, combine and cut very well. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue, and powerful scripting capabilities. Besides that, it also stocks a list of filter options perfect for adding those extra finishing touches.
  • Davinchi Resolve (FREE) – Honestly, this software is as good as if not better than some of the paid options. If you are tight on money, use this.
Advanced Video Editing Software
  • Final Cut Pro (Mac) – Final Cut Pro is a sophisticated video editing program. It offers almost all the video editing features and options you can imagine, such as multi-cam synchronization support, batch sequence capture as well as third-party plug-in support. However, it’s one of the most expensive video editing software available on the market. So think twice before you make the final decision.
  • Adobe Premier Pro (Mac/PC) – Many vloggers use Adobe Premiere to edit their videos. It’s seen as the industry-leading software for video editing. The clean, intuitive interface means it’s really easy to learn. Set it up with customixed keyboard shortcuts to make it faster to use.
  • Avid Media Composer (Mac/PC) – Avid Media Composer is designed for advanced users and video enthusiasts. It offers plenty of features such as animatted, 3D warp, paint, live matte key, color correction tool and much more to explore and apply. It has a detailed workflow and editing management for users. Besides, it also offers enhanced software and hardware options to increase the functionality of the program.

The Art of Travel Vlogging is part of the Nomadic Matt Superstar Blogging series. It is taught by two of the biggest travel YouTubers in the world, Kristen Sarah (from Hopscotch the Globe) and Nadine Sykora (from Hey Nadine).

They are two of the most successful pure travel “vloggers” on YouTube. Between them, they have almost half a million subscribers and have promoted some of the biggest brands in the world.

If you want to become a travel Vlogger/Influencer there really is no one better suited to help you with your YouTube career.

YouTube Secrets

This one is a little bit different than the others. It is more of a Get Rich Quick scheme which I don’t usually like to recommend. But I figured that may appeal to some of you so I decided to list it anyway.

I kept hearing about this course on Marketing forums and in Facebook groups, and people seemed to be pretty happy with it. So, I got a bit curious and headed over to their website.

The headline on their sales page proclaims:

“Discover How To Generate A Regular Income Direct From YouTube Without Creating Any Of Your Own Videos!”

Does it work?

I can’t say for sure as I have not tried it. As I said above, people spoke kindly of the course… But, as we all know, those could have been fake comments generated by the owner of the product to boost sales.

My only experience with this business model was from second-hand reports. A couple of years back at Affiliate World Asia, I did meet two guys who were using a similar method to bank thousands of dollars per day from affiliate offers using YouTube as a traffic source.

So, it is definitely possible.

Fortunately, you have nothing to lose if you buy it. YouTube Secrets is for sale on Clickbank and they force all their vendors to give a 30 day, unconditional, money-back guarantees. So, you could buy it, play around for a couple of weeks… and if it sucks, just get a refund.

NOTE: If you do buy this please let me know what you think as if it does suck I would like to remove it from this page.

Youtube Creator Academy (FREE)

The Youtube Creator Academy is YouTube’s own training program and it is absolutely free. You won’t find any juicy, underground money-making secrets in here – the content is created for mass consumption and is obviously biased as it is written by YouTube employees.

But there is some very useful information if you are willing to dig around for it. I suggest you check it out and read the articles that apply to you.

Youtube Courses on Udemy

Here is one of the best selling YouTube courses on Udemy.com. I have not taken the course, but from reading the course overeview it looks incredibly comprehensive.

According to the reviews, this course is incredibly comprehensive in regards to all the technical aspects of YouTube – but not so great for the “how to make money from YouTube” parts.

Pros/Cons Of YouTube Revshare Model

Pros of YouTube Revshare Model

First, we’re going to start with the pros. How would you like to follow a business model that you can start with your cell phone today without investing any further money into it?

If you have a mobile phone that you can use to take videos, you’re in business. While you may only be able to take short videos with your phone, that’s enough to get you started and on your road to a bigger income.

Another advantage of using the YouTube platform to grow your business is you won’t have to invest in any hosting or domains. Your channel will act as your domain and YouTube will be your host provider. You won’t have to pay any money at all for these privileges.

There aren’t too many other businesses out there that you can start for free with unlimited potential earnings. This is why so many people have turned to YouTube as their income earning platform of choice and many have never looked back.

YouTube is one of the most famous websites in the world ranking at number 5. It would be difficult to find anyone that doesn’t check into YouTube at least now and again as an Internet user. You’ll have access to all of this traffic for free without having to pay a dime in advertising costs.

No domain, no hosting and no advertising fees. Where else could you possibly find all of these benefits rolled up into one?

Another pro to consider is what your work will actually be. If you’re like many you are already taking videos anyway. You don’t have to spend days and days working your fingers to the bone in order to create a video and then put it up.

It’s something that you’re probably naturally doing already so why not start making money with it? If you work full time now at a 9-to-5 job you can make a video tonight that can be uploaded. It really is as easy as that.

Just about all types of video formats are supported with YouTube so you won’t have to worry about a lot of technicalities. As well, you are not limited to the number of categories that you can have on your channel.

If your dog does something funny today and then you have a piece of news that you’d like to comment on tomorrow, it can all be put on the same channel under different categories.

This means that your new business is easy to operate and you won’t have to learn a lot of technical skills to become a new YouTube Revshare income earner.

Cons of YouTube Revshare Model

Since there are so many pros to this program is hard to really come up with a lot of cons for it, but there are definitely a couple worth mentioning. It really does take a lot of views to earn a substantial income so you’ll need to be prepared for that.

This business model is built on the same premise of a snowball rolling down a hill. It starts off slowly and then starts to build up a lot of momentum.

Until this momentum builds up you can start to feel frustrated and have thoughts of giving up. When this thought kicks in you’ll know it’s the exact moment when you need to carry on. Life isn’t supposed to be easy and neither is earning income.

You will, however, be on the road to further earnings when you stick to your plan and are committed to it. This is indeed the toughest part of the YouTube Revshare model and one that you’ll have to get through in order to get to the other side.

The final Con of the Youtube model is…. well, Youtube. They are a huge corporation and are, quite frankly, a royal pain in the ass! They have MANY rules and regulations to follow and have been known to take down users channels without warning or explanation.

Below is a video by one of Youtube’s biggest stars, PewDiePie explaining why Youtube sucks. Please note that his rant really only applies to videos with questionable content in them, if you are doing kids videos you will probably not have any problems.
